September 04 And there went the summer!Yes, I am here. We have had a busy summer. With Carole's announcement of her engagement and impending marriage it got even busier than anticipated.
It was great to meet Joey. We just love him and he felt like family from the getgo. They decided on a California wedding in November. We held an Engagement party here last weekend for all of our Minnesota friends and relatives. I mentioned a hotel but Carole really wanted to have the party on the farm. Being it would be too cold in November after the wedding, the decision was made to celebrate in August! We had a beautiful white tent set up. Pork sandwiches, calico beans, potato salad, fruit kabobs, chips and veggie platters, along with a variety of delicious bars.. There was even a "candy bar" with bowls of gummie bears, skittles, m&ms, miniature candy bars! We had a Norwegian wedding cake made by my stepmom. Lots of guests... We should have had hot chocolate, though, instead of lemonade! It didn't rain but the temps dipped way down and it was quite chilly. I kept trying to round up guests to come in the house, but they said they were fine. The temps were near 80 the week before and after the party! It's 9:30 pm and the temp is 63. At the party it got down to around 40!
With having the party on our farm, we also got lots of honey do projects done. Things that just needed doing anyway. Alan helped Dave quite a bit and we also got smart in our old age and hired some of the work done. The bushes around the house and the rock needed replacing. It turned out really nice. We put some new carpet in Mariah's bedroom and replaced carpet in our farm office with matching duro ceramic tile. It is so easy to clean around here now!
About two weeks before the party, Dave got news from Rochester that little nodules were appearing in his lungs again. The oncologist called it a very slow moving progression of the disease and said they really didn't have a new drug for Dave to try.
This was quite disheartening to hear, but we have faith in God and His plan for our lives. Alan reminded me that Wikipaedia says Tarceva is very good at shrinking tumors for about 8-12 months and then the cancer cells can mutate and get around its effectiveness. I've been doing some researching on the internet and there are actually new things coming along. The question now is whether to continue on the chemo plan with a very slow progression. If Dave stops the chemos now and tries some alternative treatments will he get better or worse. It would logically seem that filling his body with pure healthy fruits and vegetables (through juicing among other things) would be a good thing to heal his cells. He has been on chemo for a long time. Some of the side effects are rather miserable, only tolerated by knowing that the cancer was being kept at bay. On the 14th and 15th of this month, Dave will be in Rochester having a full body work up of ct scans to see where we are at. I will go with him on the 15th to talk with the doctor about the next step.
Our prayer right now is for wisdom, wisdom for the doctors and wisdom and discernment for us.
On another note, my Weight Loss Warriors team won this last six week session! Woo Hoo! (we lost by half a point last time!)
24 lbs off since the first of June (slow, but sure)
I am signed up for the next session. It helps to keep me accountable. There is a 5k run on the 30th of October that I am training to run in.
Ben and Ava love their new school. They went yesterday for orientation. I will drive about 35 minutes each way four mornings a week. 8:30 - Noon
I plan to exercise, walk, shop.........get a pedicure, etc during that time. Jon and Mariah start school next week.
Tomorrow Dave and I are going to ride the motorcycle down to Lake Okoboji for a wedding and on Sunday after the four little kids sing in church we are going to take the motorcycle up to the big Minnesota get together... the State Fair!
Here are a few photos.
Jon got a haircut from his cousin Katie.
